‘Yeh Bunyaadain Hain Kamzor’

Having watched the new Rubberband video a number of times (I like giving people the benefit of doubt), I am still sitting here dumbfounded. The video production is excellent and some decent actors and models (call me) are involved. But that isn’t what has really struck me. What has left me stunned is how godawful the song is. And all this after their manager Hassaan had been going all Read more »

A Year Of Doing Nothing and Doing it Best

2002 was a year of upstarts who rose up without doing much at all. Noori came up to challenge Junoon, despite the fact the neither of them released a real album all year. Junoon rehashed old materials with a live album and the best noori could do was manage to release a couple of songs Read more »

In Duzz (Done in) Music

In Duzz Music, when it started off, was a breath of fresh air. VJs dressed in jeans (wow!), good new music around the clock and the nice graphics were all eye and ear-catching, I would find myself turning back to IM when nothing else was on or even during commercial breaks when something was actually on on other channels. Milk It

Milk it

First it was Ehtesaab, then Patriotism, followed by the Pakistani Cricket Team, Sufis, Iqbal, Pak-India unity and a handful of other causes, slogans and goods (refrigerators (Ali), Coca Cola (the band)) to sell. Now the mighty mighty Junoon have chosen to milk the 9/11 tragedy with their latest single, No More, which they have released on the net (www.junoon.com) with a sad little video and is probably going to be featured on their upcoming album. Of Burn Units, Asses and Haroon

In my last diss patch, I voiced my irritation at all our major stars picking up on causes to support and shouted them down for acting all sanctimonious. Since then it has been bothering me that I might have undercut some of the good that they might be doing. So I have come up with another tact: When in Rome, do as Romans do. If you can’t beat them, join them. If you can’t be an Abrar fan, build another hospital. Read more »

A Hole

Since the release of my email address (KiraMakora@hotmail.com) I have been swamped by emails (four (!) in number) from all sorts, all over. I must say I am touched: I never thought you guys appreciate mean spiritedness that much. For those who offered to squash this bug for being rude to their favourite artist (often Junoon), please take a number and get in line. Read more »

Yet another noori video, Tum Hans Diye this time, has gotten the poor boys embroiled in controversy. While Manwa Re was banned for depicting Lahore’s Red Light areas; Khalla got censored because it had much too much graphic violence in it; Jana tha isn’t played because it was just not Read more »

Drum Defections

The local music scene is buzzing with news of the defection of superdrummer Gumby (real name John Louis Pinto II) from the mega-band Junoon to the city’s hottest, up-and-coming band noori. The same has meant an unceremonious exit from the band for previous drummer Farhad Humayun. Read more »

How to make it (without making anything much)

The third generation of Pakistani rock/ pop bands have hit the scene. The Fourth is bubbling just under. While full albums from most of these bands are still awaited, most have already hit it big in their own right usually on the back of single songs and videos or just having a website on the net. Most of all they have hit it big because they have followed the formula. Read more »
